York Sport Union

University Sport

67 different University sport clubs are on offer at the York Sport Union. All our clubs are student-led which means they are run for the students, by the students. We have clubs that range from women’s rugby, hockey and lacrosse, to the more obscure octopush.

Many of our clubs compete in BUCS (British University College Sport). There are three types of competitions that can be entered in BUCS. These are the BUCS Leagues, Individual Competitions or Team Competitions. This will involve travelling across the country to compete against other universities. This is an incredible experience and a great way to meet new people!

BUCS Website

As well as BUCS, many of our clubs compete in local and regional leagues. This means that they got lots of match practice whilst playing against athletes of varying skills and abilities.

College Sport

Each of our 9 Colleges take part in the College Sport programme. We have over 13 regular sports leagues as well as one off tournaments and playing opportunities. The showcase of College Sport is College Varsity where we take on Durham University Colleges annually in term 2.

Recreational Sport

We have recently introduced a level of sport that is free to those that take part and involves little or no commitment. Our first programme of recreational sport is TAGGED.

If you are looking for fun, fitness or both, head to the JLD at the Sports Centre on Heslington West on Thursday from 6pm - 7pm. It is completely free and available to any York student or staff member.

The rivalry between York and Lancaster has a long history full of conflict. Stemming from the War of the Roses that resulted in decades of civil war in the fifteenth century, this fierce rivalry lives on to this day, in the form of the largest inter-university sporting tournament in Europe.

Roses is easily the biggest event in the sporting calendar. This bitterly contested tournament alternates between York and Lancaster, with a full weekend of feisty fixtures taking place across over 50 sports. The history books record a narrow lead for York, with 27 overall Roses victories to Lancaster's 25.

2017 was the biggest Roses to date as York beat Lancaster in a thrilling home competition! Make sure to keep a close eye on the Roses website for the latest updates and news on our quest for an awar Roses victory in 2018! #RosesAreWhite

Colours Ball

Our annual York Sport Union Colours Ball is the pinnacle of the sporting year at The University of York. It is an evening to celebrate the fantastic achievements of the 67 different university sports clubs we have at York over the year and reward the students who have dedicated their time and efforts.

Accreditation Scheme

Our clubs and their members already do fantastic work throughout their time at university and it is only right that this is acknowledged. We have chosen to create a Club Accreditation Scheme that rewards community engagement, being inclusive and promoting development. We have based the accreditation scheme around these three objectives as this is what steers the students movement at York and we want our clubs to be the driving force behind this.

As a Union we want our clubs to be outward facing, striving to include everyone and working as hard as they can over the year to develop their club and its members. This accreditation scheme will encourage clubs to work harder together and engage members in the objectives, creating a stronger and more unified club.

The below clubs currently have accreditation status:

Gold - Women's Rugby
Gold - Swimming & Waterpolo
Silver - Netball
Bronze - Handball

Equal Opportunities

We aim to break down the potential barriers preventing people from participating in sport at York and make sports clubs accessible and inclusive to ALL, regardless of race, sexual orientation or nationality. The equal opportunities scheme aims to educate and discuss the issues that arise particularly within sport that prevents them from engaging. Therefore, the members of your club that participate in the scheme will become Equal Opportunities Officers. A variety of liberation networks have signed up to be a part of the scheme showing their enthusiasm and commitment for Equal Opportunities.
